Township Forums are the local element of Wigan Borough Partnership and contribute to the delivery of the Sustainable Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement.
Comprising the areas of Hindley and Hindley Green to the north, along the A577, and the communities of Platt Bridge and Abram to the south, this township is very much at the heart of Wigan Borough. And with many miles of open countryside surrounding them, they are truly the “Greenheart” of the borough.
“Greenheart” is a major new countryside park which includes Amberswood Common, Low Hall Park, Borsdane Wood and the marshes of Abram – all renowned for their wildlife and recreational activities and within a few minutes of Hindley town centre.
Hindley has its own golf course and swimming pool. The lake at Hindley Green offers a pleasant place for fishing or to feed the ducks. Abram is a centre for horse riding and the Platt Bridge Morris Dancing maintain an important part of local tradition.
The urban parts of the township include major shopping areas, some of the most important industry in the borough, as well as a historic library in Hindley and a brand new community village for older people in Platt Bridge. Also in Platt Bridge, a new school and medical centre – including the local community-based Life Centre – enhance the area and offer high quality services.
Nine elected councillors, across the three wards of Hindley, Hindley Green and Abram, represent the people on Wigan Council, and the MP for Makerfield represents the area at Westminster.
