Township Forums are the local element of Wigan Borough Partnership and contribute to the delivery of the Sustainable Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement.
These are two towns which have come increasingly together over the years.
Lowton has retained a village feel, with its attractive early 18th century church, whilst Golborne’s main industry for a century was its coal mine, before it closed following a tragic explosion which claimed 10 lives. The mine site now includes employment units and a modern health centre.
Other recent building in the township has seen a hotel, restaurants and major industrial units, as well as investment in a new school building for Golborne and improved play facilities.
Lowton’s communities – St Mary’s, St Luke’s and Lane Head – are all easily accessed from the East Lancashire Road A580, and Golborne’s High Street is on the A573 between Warrington and Wigan. The town centre is a conservation area and includes a relatively new but heritage-style town square and clock, named in honour of local boxing legend Peter Kane. Light industry and small retail premises employ many people locally, and there are two high schools – one in each town.
The township is represented by the Member of Parliament for Leigh and by three ward councillors for Golborne and Lowton West and three for Lowton East.
