Township Forums are the local element of Wigan Borough Partnership and contribute to the delivery of the Sustainable Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement
Standish Aspull Shevington is the most northerly of Wigan’s Townships and at over 39 square kilometres is also by far the largest. However, due to the large rural areas around Haigh Country Park and Standish Park, it has the lowest population density of any of the Townships.
Three distinctive small towns are united as a township in the very north of Wigan Borough, with much open land and farming surrounding them.
Standish, dominated by its Grade I listed parish church, has retained a village feel throughout modern development. With nearby hotel and conference facilities and the attractive Worthington Lakes for walking and fishing, it is an attractive point of entry to the borough along the A49 from Preston. Standish High is a well regarded local school.
To the west is Shevington, which lies alongside the M6. The Shevington area, with its specialist technology high school, extends to the borders of West Lancashire and the village of Appley Bridge. There is a railway station here, and also nearby at Gathurst. Shevington has an elected parish council for the community, which receives a precept from Wigan Borough’s council tax.
Aspull is a distinctive community, with open land separating houses from the main routes through the village. The Fingerpost monument and a traditionally styled clock form a clear centre to the area, and to the south west, the historic Haigh Hall country park offers extensive woodland walks, as well as a play area and refreshment facilities.
The Member of Parliament for Wigan represents the area nationally, and ward councillors for Shevington with Lower Ground, Standish with Langtree and (in part) Aspull, New Springs and Whelley represent the area on Wigan Council.

Place Survey
The Place Survey is a bi-anuual national survey undertaken by every local authority in the country. It asks residents about many different issues including how they feel about their local area, the services they receive and about local issues such as anti-social behaviour, litter and transport. A Place Survey Presentation (.pdf, 38kb) highlighting local findings has been created for each of Wigan's ten Townships.
