Township Forums are the local element of Wigan Borough Partnership and contribute to the delivery of the Sustainable Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement.

To the east of the borough, Tyldesley and Astley are commuter settlements with easy access to the A580 East Lancashire Road and the motorway network.  They each have extensive mining and milling histories, evidence of which can still be seen in the landscape – notably the distinctive buildings of Astley Colliery, now a museum and the only surviving pit head in the area.

Mosley Common, on the border with Salford, has seen a recent partnership between local schoolchildren, shopkeepers and the council to improve the look of local amenities, and now an impressive piece of public art – a pithead wheel – acknowledges the history of the village.

To the south are ancient mosslands, crossed by George Stephenson’s Liverpool and Manchester Railway in the 1820s.  Tyldesley overlooks Chat Moss from its higher vantage on the ‘Bongs’ – the local name for the steep hill approaching Tyldesley from the south.

On that hill is Astley Street Park, opposite is the rugby club and close by is the village of Gin Pit.  A former mining community, the village remains close knit, holding annual fayres on the village green and supporting Borough in Bloom with attractive floral displays.

Light industry thrives in Astley, along with a number of local pubs and restaurants.  A hidden gem surrounded by ancient woodland is the Dam House, a Grade II listed building dating from 1595 and used for a century as a hospital until 1994.  It has now been restored and as well as office accommodation, a clinic and day nursery, people can relax in the tearoom there.

Represented by the Leigh MP at Westminster, three councillors from the two wards of Tyldesley and Astley Mosley Common represent the people on Wigan Council.  The township has a population of around 23,684 according to 2008 mid-year population estimates, with most of the population living in the northern part of the Township around the town of Tyldesley.

Place Survey

The Place Survey is a bi-annual national survey undertaken by every local authority in the country. It asks residents about many different issues including how they feel about their local area, the services they receive and about local issues such as anti-social behaviour, litter and transport. A Place Survey Presentation (.pdf, 38kb) highlighting local findings has been created for each of Wigan's ten Townships.
