Wigan South

The Town of Wigan is split into two Townships, Wigan North and Wigan South. Wigan South contains the areas of Kitt Green, Marsh Green, Worsley Hall, Worsley Mesnes and Hawkley.

Township Forums are the local element of Wigan Borough Partnership and contribute to the delivery of the Sustainable Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement

Wigan South covers an area including the electoral Wards of Pemberton, Douglas and Worsley Mesnes and contains the areas of Kitt Green, Lamberhead Green and Marsh Green in the northwest, Worsley Hall, Worsley Mesnes and Newtown in the centre and Hawkley in the south east.

Within the Township can be found the Robin Park retail park, including the DW Stadium and the Wigan Pier quarter, including Trencherfield Mill. The built-up areas are mainly in the centre of the Township, with the large wetland area of the Flashes dominating the south east of the Township. The west of the Township is bordered by the M6 motorway, and the Township is separated from Wigan North Township by the main North Western railway that runs through the centre of Wigan.

It is the Township with the highest population density. One of the Wigan Life ‘spokes’ is being built in Marsh Green within Wigan South Township.

The Place Survey is a bi-anuual national survey undertaken by every local authority in the country. It asks residents about many different issues including how they feel about their local area, the services they receive and about local issues such as anti-social behaviour, litter and transport.
